Discipline: The Key to Achieving True Freedom in Life

Chapter 1: The Power of Discipline
Discipline is a hallmark of the most accomplished individuals.
Whether it’s a top business executive, an elite bowhunter, or a renowned podcaster, they all share a deep commitment to discipline. They are driven by a purpose and when distractions threaten to derail them, they quickly regain focus and endure the mental challenges. Discipline involves committing to tasks that may not be enjoyable, but are essential for long-term success.
It's about consistently dedicating time to self-improvement. Personally, writing was a chore for me, yet I recognized its value for my career and personal growth, so I dedicated hours to it daily (and I'm still honing this skill).
In my younger years, I dismissed running as dull, claiming it didn’t suit my muscular physique. But that was merely an excuse. I have since learned that if I can run for extended periods, I gain mastery over both my mind and body. Thus, I strive to put in the effort daily, especially on the days when motivation is lacking.
Discipline requires unwavering determination.
“Discipline involves confronting your fears to overcome them. It’s about choosing the tougher path — the uphill battle,” states Jocko Willink. He encourages us to introspect daily by asking:
- Who am I?
- What have I learned?
- What have I created?
- What progress have I made?
- Who have I assisted?
- How am I improving myself today?
- Am I getting better, faster, stronger, healthier, smarter?
- Is this the person I want to become?
- Is this all I can offer?
- Am I resigned to this being my life?
Discipline equates to freedom because it is a conscious choice. You decide where you want to succeed. You can choose to succumb to excuses and blame others or opt for a proactive stance: “Get up. Go. Fight on.” When you make resilience your default response to challenges, you will overcome any obstacle in your path.
This pursuit of improvement is the truest form of freedom and triumph:
“To stand tall, even in the face of inevitable setbacks — to stand and fight.”
