Dopamine is produced in the brain and serves as a chemical messenger, transmitting signals between nerve cells throughout the brain and body. Additionally, it is synthesized by our adrenal glands, which are situated atop each kidney, functioning as a hormone.

Remarkably, dopamine is often referred to as the "happy hormone" or "feel-good hormone" due to its role in enhancing our sense of well-being.

It's noteworthy that dopamine is closely related to epinephrine, or adrenaline, which prepares the body for action. This connection is crucial as we delve deeper into its implications.

Initially, dopamine was perceived merely as a chemical released after performing a task, acting as a reward mechanism. While this is accurate, we now understand that dopamine is also released during and even prior to an action, which is pivotal for long-term health and happiness.

This shift in understanding transforms our perspective from merely achieving results to embracing the journey itself. The motivation to pursue an activity is driven by the presence of dopamine, making it a fundamental aspect of our behavior.

To maintain elevated dopamine levels consistently, it is essential to find a balance and avoid extreme spikes. As Andrew Huberman emphasizes, “Don’t spike dopamine prior to engaging in effort, and don’t spike dopamine after engaging in effort. Learn to spike dopamine from effort itself.” This insight represents a significant advancement in our understanding of dopamine and its role in maintaining a baseline of happiness.

When the focus shifts from the outcome to the process, a transformative change occurs. The journey becomes the focal point, fostering ongoing motivation to engage in efforts, thereby cultivating a continuous cycle of progress. If our sole aim is to reach a destination, we may find ourselves stagnant once we arrive.

This shift in mindset allows for clarity, focus, productivity, energy, calmness, joy, and connection.

Now, let’s revisit adrenaline. During moments of fear, excitement, or arousal, we experience an adrenaline rush that compels us to act. Consider the adrenaline surge an athlete feels before a game; it fuels their performance throughout the match and even during the preparation leading up to the event.

Given that dopamine and adrenaline are closely related, it’s clear that dopamine is not solely a reward for our actions, but also a precursor and companion to them.

For a long time, many believed that engaging in activities that trigger dopamine release was essential for achieving joy and happiness. However, this notion has been challenged, particularly concerning sustained happiness. While a surge of dopamine can create feelings of elation in the moment, it often leads to a swift decline, reminiscent of a sugar high or the fleeting pleasure of certain substances.

The key to enduring happiness, it appears, lies in finding joy in the process itself. This approach allows us to celebrate achievements while minimizing attachment to outcomes, enabling us to return to work with renewed vigor.

The next day, the village learned that the government had summoned all young men for military service. All of the neighbors’ sons were drafted, leaving the farmer’s son at home due to his injury. The neighbors mourned their losses while congratulating the farmer for his son's misfortune.

“Maybe,” he replied once more.

In today's world, dopamine is a prevalent currency, easily accessed through social media, streaming platforms, emails, shopping, and various other activities that provide instant gratification. This represents the "YES!" mentality — the desire for immediate pleasure.

Conversely, the middle path emphasizes consistency and gradual progress. While it may not be as exhilarating, neuroscience suggests that this approach is crucial for achieving lasting happiness, tranquility, and fulfillment. Ultimately, the choice between quick fixes and steady growth shapes our future decisions.
