Embrace Your Potential: You Are Great and Capable

Chapter 1: Unleashing Your Inner Strength

It’s common to feel disheartened when our aspirations seem to clash with our true calling.

As human beings, our potential is vast. We have the ability to:

  • Scale mountains.
  • Analyze brainwaves.
  • Excel in athletics.
  • Pursue careers in medicine, surgery, and mental health.
  • Volunteer with the Peace Corps.
  • Create fashion.
  • Engage in learning.
  • Share love.
  • Inspire others.
  • And much more.

“The more a person reflects on positive thoughts, the better their world and the broader world will be.”

~Confucius, Chinese philosopher, 551–479 B.C.

However, many of us experience frustration when our efforts don’t yield the desired results. For instance, I have yet to receive a promotion at any of my jobs. While I’ve been granted raises, advancement opportunities have remained elusive, even after I expressed my interest.

Management offered me a low-tier position, which I firmly declined. This left me feeling inadequate. I know I possess capabilities beyond being just another employee; my destiny is not limited to that role. What should I do next?

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” ~Philippians 4:13

I once wrote about my attempts to learn Python programming in my late thirties, only to realize something wasn’t resonating with me. What was I missing?

Why couldn’t I follow the path of others who had clear ambitions from childhood, like becoming architects or lawyers? Friends from my past seem to be thriving, while I find myself contemplating books I’ve never submitted for publication and jobs that often involve answering phones.

Then, one day, while listening to “Breaking Away” by Vantage on YouTube Music, I experienced a revelation. The song reminded me of an important truth:

Why do we doubt our greatness and capabilities?

We must liberate ourselves from the expectations imposed by society.

I have frequently compared myself to others. If I struggled with a task, I viewed it as a reflection of my worth, leading to a diminished self-esteem. This mindset is a dangerous trap.

Perhaps you aren’t destined to lead a company; after all, the workplace might be rife with negativity.

Maybe you aren’t ready to own a home yet. Do you comprehend the complexities involved, such as financing and taxes?

While computer programming may sound appealing, is it truly your passion? Do you enjoy being in front of a screen all day, especially if you already suffer from eye strain and headaches?

Teaching might not align with your strengths; perhaps you thrive in a more personal, one-on-one tutoring environment.

What I’ve learned over time is the importance of assessing why we feel envy and what we desire. My husband and I dream of owning a home, but we recognize the effort it requires. For now, a luxurious apartment feels more appropriate. Maybe in five years, or even one year, home ownership will be within our grasp.

I focus my energy on nurturing the gifts God has given me at this moment. Why should I envy someone else’s garden when my own needs care?

“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself. Do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.”

~Bruce Lee

Many of us are unaware of our true selves yet yearn for lives that seem appealing but might not suit us.

This isn’t to suggest that you won’t eventually teach, own a home, or invest time in studying computers. I simply want to remind you that at this moment, you are great. You are capable as you navigate your personal growth journey.

Your age, race, or beliefs do not limit you. There are countless examples of individuals in their sixties and seventies earning diplomas and degrees. The founder of KFC was in his sixties when he launched his iconic business.

Believe in your potential.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
