Chapter 1: The Importance of Asking Questions
During a job interview, it’s crucial to ask insightful and relevant questions. This practice not only demonstrates your engagement and ability to think critically but also indicates your genuine interest in the position.

Section 1.1: Pushing Boundaries
We shouldn’t hesitate to explore unconventional questions with our prospective employers. I conducted an experiment by attending several job interviews over three months, without any intention of accepting an offer or believing I had a chance of being hired. My objective was to approach these interviews with:
- No expectations
- No desire to secure the positions
- A mindset of treating these discussions as casual conversations
As a result, I felt relaxed and authentic during the interviews, allowing me to confidently pose five impactful questions:
- How have you made an impact as a leader?
- What do you consider your greatest strength in leadership?
- What is your biggest area for improvement?
- Can you share an example of how you supported a team member's growth?
- How do you define and recognize success?
Most interviewers responded positively, appreciating the depth of my inquiries. However, some were taken aback and offered vague replies, while a few appeared visibly uncomfortable.
Section 1.2: The Interview as a Two-Way Street
It's essential to remember that job interviews are reciprocal. They provide you with the opportunity to evaluate whether the potential colleagues and manager are a good match for you. By asking the right questions, you can gain valuable insights into whether the hiring manager aligns with your career aspirations.
After each interview, reflect on these two critical questions:
- Do I want to work for this leader?
- Will this leader support my growth towards my goals?
The distinction between having a supportive manager and not can be significant, affecting your job satisfaction and career trajectory.
Chapter 2: The Power of Choice
Throughout your professional journey, you may not always have control over your manager. However, during the interview process for a new role, you hold the power to choose. It’s a pivotal decision—make it wisely.
