Finding Joy in Everyday Moments: Our Autism Journey

Chapter 1: A Morning of Connection
In our daily lives, the prospect of a full night's sleep may not always be achievable, but it would certainly be a welcome change. When Owen heard me rise, I realized that sleep was no longer an option. So, I brewed my coffee and prepared his breakfast. Remarkably, he was calm and excited about going to school.
I returned to my bed, and he approached me to grab his tablet, ensuring I remained seated while he headed back to his room. The sound of his laughter echoed from his space, a delightful highlight of my day. After a while, he came to enjoy his breakfast, and once he finished, he joined me again, and more laughter filled the air.
I cherish those mornings when he feels so engaged with the day ahead. He enthusiastically shared his plans and asked if he could take his robot, BeatBo, to show his teacher. I encouraged him, clarifying that while he could present it, it would need to return to his backpack afterward.
This moment marked a significant step for him, taking a toy to school. Discovering toys that resonate with him is a precious experience. We got ready for school and stepped outside to wait for the bus, his excitement palpable as he anticipated the journey.
I informed his teacher about the robot, emphasizing its importance. I also mentioned that I instructed him to keep it tucked away to avoid distractions. She reassured me that he handled it beautifully and listened when it was time to put it away. I felt grateful that this experience was positive for him, illustrating his growth.
After school, I picked him up for therapy, where I learned he had a great day. He requested to drive by the statue of the burger boy that he adores. Unfortunately, I missed the first exit, which upset him. I reminded him to remain calm and breathe through the moment. We still had time to reach the statue via the second exit, but he needed to stay composed. As he repeated "pool pool," I recognized he was connecting his feelings with his behavior, which helped him regain his calmness. For that, I was once again thankful.
His therapy session went remarkably well. It's clear he is beginning to articulate his emotions more effectively and grasp their meanings. I also appreciate how he is incorporating more words to express himself. I'm encouraging him to use more descriptive phrases, such as saying, "I want to ride the bus tomorrow," instead of just "bus." He is making incredible strides, and I have faith that he will continue to improve.
During our evening, I received a scam call, and Owen amusingly began naming potential callers. When I explained it was a scam, he quipped, "Hello scam goodbye scam Zack rat hat." I couldn't help but laugh at his creative responses.
Our night was filled with songs and games. Although he experienced some sensory overload, he gradually became calmer. I am profoundly grateful for all the progress he has made. Each day, let us embrace life fully, find our motivation, and seek joy in everything we do. Sending smiles and sweet moments to all!
