Chapter 1: The Myth of Manifestation

Have you ever pondered where your “luck” has vanished to?

What does it mean to harness the full potential of our minds, conjuring forth each strand of positivity within us to resonate and attract similar energies from the universe? It’s akin to depleting eons of positive karma within a single lifetime. Yet, this truth often goes unspoken, as most so-called “spiritual” practices lack empirical support from longstanding traditions.

In a universe characterized by impermanence, your prowess in manifesting is equally transient. Each individual carries a unique existential burden, shaped by a karmic blend of mental, vocal, and physical energies. These energies evolve in response to our environment and level of awareness.

Many spiritual traditions emphasize purification to reveal and release negative tendencies, thereby alleviating unfavorable karma. However, the practice of manifestation, as promoted within the new age movement, stands in stark contrast. It encourages individuals to gather and amplify their inherent capacities—transforming positive habits and energies into tangible outcomes.

Once this potential is realized in the physical realm, it undergoes a fundamental change. It shifts from mere aspiration and discipline towards a state of exhaustion and a comfortable paycheck. The cause must remain present to yield an effect, yet if one is solely fixated on the fruits of their labor, they risk neglecting to sow additional seeds.

This is precisely why the local “Manifesting Monica” in yoga pants may come across as inconsiderate to those outside her vision board. There’s a critical element that’s often overlooked.

Ancient spiritual texts from India and Tibet consistently emphasize the importance of ‘dedicating merit’ following each positive act. Channeling all your positive energies towards attaining ultimate spiritual enlightenment is a far more prudent investment than squandering it on fleeting endeavors.

Furthermore, dedicating your merits to aid all beings in achieving enlightenment extends beyond the boundaries of time and space, thus generating a perpetual positive momentum. This is why Bodhisattvas, or Buddhas-in-training, are depicted adorned with exquisite jewels and regal attire; their influence, fortune, and serendipity remain unceasing.

The good energies that manifest all these wonders never diminish because their intent to benefit others is limitless. Consequently, the universe is eager to support their mission—no requests necessary. This realization served as a profound wake-up call in my life.

Rather than lamenting about the state of your existence and seeking to “create a better reality,” confront your hardships directly. Is your suffering influenced by your subjective mental states?

Initially, on the spiritual path, you may attribute about 20% of your pain to internal factors, while the rest appears to stem from external sources. However, for enlightened beings like the Dalai Lama, who perceive the roots of suffering devoid of ego, it becomes clear that nearly all of it arises from one’s own mind—whether in this life or in past incarnations.

Only your mind possesses the capability to untangle its own complexities. External possessions, like a yacht, will offer little solace. Eventually, one realizes that all you genuinely need is an awareness distinct from the mind, which enables you to mend its flaws—recognizing that 'desires' merely distract from essential inner work.

We cannot endlessly pursue trivial whims and impulses. The world bears heavy burdens of inequality and injustice, fundamentally rooted in the desire to elevate oneself at the expense of others. Strive to be a source of nourishment for others, and you may find yourself liberated from the pangs of hunger.

Explore the idea that manifestation relies on misleading science rather than genuine spiritual principles.
