The Impact of Technology on Our Lives: A Double-Edged Sword

Chapter 1: The Ubiquity of Technology
In the past twenty years, the technological landscape has evolved dramatically. It’s evident in our daily routines. Technology has become an integral part of our lives, almost like a symbiotic relationship; while we utilize technology for communication, task completion, and entertainment, it, in turn, often drains our time and health.
Think about the people you encounter on public transport, at work, or even on the street. Notice how many of them are absorbed in their smartphones or smartwatches? Many of us may be surprised by our weekly screen time reports. Consider those who binge-watch shows on platforms like Netflix or Disney; significant hours are consumed by screens daily.
However, this extensive screen time comes with its own set of consequences. One serious concern is the radiation emitted by our devices. The constant exposure to electromagnetic radiation, including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals, can have detrimental effects on our well-being. Additionally, the notorious blue light from screens can harm our eyesight over time.
We often keep these devices close, even using them right before bed. I, too, am not immune to this habit. Despite understanding the negative impact on my health and sleep quality, I occasionally watch TV or browse my phone at night. While I have a Netflix subscription, I prefer reading books over watching TV. Nonetheless, I find myself frequently using my phone throughout the day, and while I try to stay focused, I often catch myself mindlessly scrolling.
I have made strides in reducing my screen time, particularly before sleep, leading to noticeable improvements in my rest quality. The key takeaway is awareness; excessive technology can be more harmful than beneficial. Moderation is crucial. Spending less time on devices positively influences both mental and physical health.
While the narrative may seem critical of technology, it’s important to recognize its advantages. Technology is designed to assist and simplify our lives. Despite the market being saturated, each year introduces new versions of devices that people eagerly adopt for various reasons, indicating a constant demand for innovation.
Let's examine the app market as well. The trend towards digitization is evident through countless apps created to simplify our lives. This sector is ever-evolving, adapting to the shifting needs and desires of the public. Just like our parents adapted to smartphones and apps, we too must embrace whatever innovations the future holds.
Take a look at how banking operates today. Financial institutions are encouraging users to complete transactions from home via apps, eliminating the need for physical visits.
Recently, I accompanied my 62-year-old mother-in-law on a trip to the bank. She had some errands to run, so I waited in the car. Suddenly, she rushed back, visibly upset. She expressed frustration towards the bank staff for urging her to use the banking app for her transaction.
Although I hadn’t stepped into a bank in years, I understand that older generations may struggle with these technological shifts. I attempted to explain that adapting to these changes is essential and that the transaction she needed could have been completed quickly if she had embraced the app. The staff even offered to assist her with downloading and setting it up.
Unfortunately, my efforts were in vain. My mother-in-law insisted on my assistance, disregarding the app. Eventually, she managed to download it and complete her transaction, but she was adamant about not wanting the app, claiming it was too complicated.
I found it amusing that she could navigate Facebook but struggled with a banking app. Ironically, she later lost her credit card and had to use the app to block it.
