Chapter 1: The Game of Emotions
Weeks had passed since I last played basketball, and to add to my challenges, I had just recovered from a cold. My nephew was dominating the game. The previous time we played, I had bragged after winning, and now he was seeking his revenge.
During his turn, he skillfully crossed to the right, drove down the lane, and executed a floater — a shot I had taught him — over my outstretched arms, scoring his fifth basket. The score was now 5-0, and my frustration began to rise.
Despite my efforts, none of my shots found the net. Determined, I ramped up my defense and managed to halt his advance. He attempted a layup, but I successfully stole the ball. Now it was my turn.
I checked the ball, inhaled deeply, and charged toward the basket, hoping to secure my first point. Unfortunately, the ball ricocheted off the backboard and landed in his hands. He then went on to score two contested three-pointers, sealing a 7-0 victory over me. I couldn't even manage a single point, largely because I was overwhelmed by my emotions.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar emphasizes the importance of emotional control in achieving success: “You have to be able to center yourself, to let all of your emotions go… Don’t ever forget that you play with your soul as well as your body.”
If you find yourself frustrated with a task, take a moment to realign your thoughts and feelings. This simple act can lead to greater accomplishments.
