Memes in Math: A Fun Approach to Learning

Chapter 1: The Role of Memes in Math Education
For many years, I've incorporated memes into my lectures for two primary reasons. Firstly, they infuse humor into the classroom, which can significantly improve the learning experience, especially for first-year students or when tackling more tedious topics. Secondly, memes serve as a quick and entertaining way to gauge students' comprehension of recent material. They offer an informal diagnostic tool that is less intimidating than traditional mini-tests. I've observed that students are more willing to admit when they don't grasp a meme than when they struggle with a formal assessment, perceiving the former as a more acceptable form of "failure."
While memes will never fully replace conventional assessments—due to the limited data they provide—they are much easier to integrate throughout the course without needing dedicated time for other evaluation methods.
With that in mind, here are a few of my favorite math memes; I hope you find them enjoyable!
- Composition of Functions
- Set Theory
- Calculus
This next one might be my favorite; its relatability has only increased with time.
- Number Theory
- Statistics
It’s important to note that I do not claim authorship of these memes. Many were inspired by the creative work of others, to whom I owe my gratitude for bringing joy to my classrooms over the years.
