The Milkshake Study

Conducted in 2011 by Alia J Crum, the study titled “Mind Over Milkshakes: Mindsets, Not Just Nutrients, Determine Ghrelin Response,” aimed to explore whether the mindset with which we consume food affects our sense of fullness. Researchers measured the hormone ghrelin, which plays a crucial role in signaling hunger and satiety.

In this study, 46 participants enjoyed the same milkshake, containing 380 kcal, on two separate occasions. However, they were given different calorie counts: once as a rich 620 kcal shake and then as a light 140 kcal shake. Blood samples were analyzed to see if the participants’ beliefs about the milkshake impacted their ghrelin levels.

Results of the Study

The findings were truly fascinating. The report revealed that when participants believed they were indulging in a high-calorie shake, their ghrelin levels dropped significantly after consumption. Conversely, when they thought they were having a lighter shake, the ghrelin response was much less pronounced. This indicates that participants' feelings of fullness aligned more closely with their perceptions rather than the actual caloric content.
