Chapter 1: The Allure of Online Teaching

Teaching online has gained immense popularity, and for good reason! It offers a flexible and straightforward way to share knowledge without the hassles of traditional classroom settings.

As someone who has taught in a physical classroom, I can attest that managing 25-30 students simultaneously is no small feat. You juggle lesson planning, grading assignments, tracking student progress, and maintaining communication with parents and other educators for up to 150 students each semester.

In contrast, the online teaching environment simplifies this process significantly. There's no need to craft elaborate lesson plans, engage with parents, or monitor student progress outside of class hours. Evaluations are streamlined into the short surveys you fill out at the end of each session, conveniently included within your work schedule.

Most online lessons run for 25 minutes, with an additional five minutes dedicated to evaluations. During this time, you reflect on what was covered, highlight student strengths and areas for improvement, and provide suggestions for future learning. You have the flexibility to choose how many lessons to teach each day by setting your own availability.

Online teaching typically involves one-on-one sessions or small groups of up to four students, allowing for personalized interactions. Students select lessons based on their proficiency and interests, so your role is primarily to guide them through the material. You’ll review vocabulary, discuss examples, and engage in short reading exercises using a listen-and-repeat method. You’ll check for understanding and help clarify any confusion. It’s as simple as that!

So, why isn't everyone making the switch to online teaching? While I can’t say for certain, I’ll acknowledge there are some downsides. However, I believe the advantages far outweigh the drawbacks.

Let’s delve into the benefits. Firstly, you can work from virtually anywhere with just a laptop, headset, and reliable internet connection. Depending on the platform, you may not even need teaching experience or certification. If you lack formal teaching credentials, simply share your experience tutoring friends or family—this can suffice.

If you can read and connect with people, you’re likely to thrive in this role. You’ll also have the opportunity to interact with students from all over the globe. Unlike traditional classrooms, where some students may be disengaged, online learners are typically motivated and appreciative of your assistance.

Personally, I find teaching adults more enjoyable than children, as I love engaging in conversations and learning about their backgrounds. However, if you’re concerned about grammar or prefer working with kids, platforms catering to younger students offer straightforward teaching methods. With a bit of training, you’ll adapt quickly.

Compensation varies by platform, but given the ease of the job, earning between $15-$26 per hour seems reasonable. Additionally, there are numerous incentives and referral bonuses available. If you know others interested in teaching, you can earn up to $95 USD for every new teacher you refer.

However, no job is without its drawbacks. One significant challenge is the scheduling. Many online teaching companies cater to students in Asia, leading to unconventional peak hours. Evening classes in Asia mean early morning slots for those in North or South America. While these hours might align well for someone with a regular job, they can be inconvenient for others.

Moreover, it might take time to build a consistent student base. Initially, your available time slots may not fill up, but persistence and positive reviews often lead to increased bookings within a month.

Lastly, strict penalties exist for missed classes, which can affect your earnings if you are disorganized. However, this can be easily managed by simply logging in on time.

   • Flexibility: Set your own schedule with no minimum hour commitments.
   • Peak Hours: 6–9 AM EST on weekdays and 9 PM–10 AM EST on weekends.

2. Italki
   • Options: Become a Professional Teacher or Community Tutor.
   • Requirements: No credentials needed for Community Tutor role.
   • Pay: Set your own rates from $5 to $40 USD per hour, with a 15% commission for Italki.
