This phenomenon is particularly relevant when it comes to the challenges of quitting smoking, as demonstrated in a recent study by James Erskine from the University of London.

In his research, Erskine divided 85 smokers, averaging 31 years old, into three distinct groups. Over three weeks, each group was assigned specific tasks: one group was instructed to minimize thoughts about smoking during the second week, while another was encouraged to think about it as much as possible. The remaining group served as a control with no particular instructions. Participants logged their daily cigarette consumption in a notebook.

The findings were telling: those tasked with suppressing thoughts of smoking initially smoked less during the second week but ended up increasing their consumption in the third week. This suggests that while trying to mentally quit smoking can yield short-term benefits, it may ultimately encourage greater use. Additionally, participants who exerted the most effort to avoid thinking about smoking often had a history of unsuccessful attempts to quit.

In a related study conducted two years prior, Erskine similarly highlighted the detrimental effects of thought suppression. Participants who tried to avoid thinking about chocolate ended up consuming more of it.

As someone who has remained smoke-free for over a year, I can personally relate to Erskine's findings. There have been countless moments when I've thought about having a cigarette, yet I’ve consistently managed to resist the temptation. I hope to continue this trend.
