These networks enable trees to communicate through chemical signals, hormones, and slow-moving electrical impulses, showcasing a sophisticated living community deeply intertwined with the larger ecosystem. The growth of a tree and the mass it adds each year relies on both climate and the overall health of its surroundings.

A tree ring symbolizes a year of growth, and collectively, these rings narrate the historical narrative of climatic and ecological shifts throughout the tree's lifetime. They communicate with each other through these networks and provide a written record of their experiences in their growth rings.

Tree rings offer insights into climate conditions long before systematic weather recording began. Research published in October 2021 analyzed 300 years of tree ring data from longleaf pines across seven locations in North and South Carolina. Each year’s growth reveals a pattern of light and dark wood bands, with lighter bands indicating early growth and darker ones representing later growth. The study focused on variations in the dark bands, which correlate with hurricane seasons; thicker dark bands signify wetter conditions.

By examining three centuries of tree growth, researchers were able to identify periods of excess rainfall and drought. The cores document a historical account of hurricane season precipitation and reveal a trend of increasing moisture since the 1700s. This research found a pattern of heightened hurricane-season rainfall due to the slowing of storm movement. Tree rings indicate that tropical cyclones are stalling, resulting in intensified rainfall and flooding in the Carolinas. Longleaf pines thrive in sandy, well-drained soils, meaning only storms with prolonged heavy rainfall significantly influence their growth rings.

Tree rings serve as valuable indicators of long-term changes in the coastal ecosystems of the Carolinas, providing direct and quantifiable evidence of alterations driven by climate change.

This area was once home to the Anasazi civilization, which thrived for over a millennium. However, between 1275 and 1300 A.D., this advanced culture vanished, leaving the land barren. Just one generation was enough to extinguish a thousand years of civilization.

The tree rings provide clues about the fate of the Anasazi, as dry years manifest as thinner, compacted rings. By tracing these rings back over the past 1200 years, we can observe a timeline of severe droughts, including the first recorded megadrought in the 800s. This prolonged period of dryness foreshadowed subsequent dry spells in the mid-1100s, 1200s, and late 1500s, ultimately contributing to the collapse of Anasazi society. As water resources dwindled under the relentless heat of a megadrought, the remaining Anasazi were compelled to abandon their homes because life cannot exist without water.

Today, we find ourselves 21 years into another megadrought, one that is intensified by climate change. The narratives told by tree rings are crucial; they recount long-forgotten histories and caution us about the future of 40 million people who could face a fate similar to that of the Anasazi, illustrating that without water, life is unsustainable.
