Chapter 1: The Nature of Creative Work

Creative expression is inherently a collaborative endeavor.

Have you ever found yourself hastily checking out others' opinions on a movie you couldn't stand? Or felt compelled to share your disdain for a recently read book with anyone willing to listen? I certainly have.

The internet simplifies the process of finding individuals who share our viewpoints. This instinct to seek validation for our feelings is natural; we want to feel connected and not isolated in our opinions. While being unique can be appealing, it rarely holds the same survival value as popularity.

Often, we react defensively to creative works that clash with our tastes. We launch critiques without considering that the artwork might have merits. It's essential to recognize that the creative process involves two participants: the artist and the audience. Since our individual perspectives contribute significantly to the experience, we must incorporate them into our evaluation of the art we engage with.

Reflecting on my past, I realize that friends and family often questioned my habit of rereading certain books. Now, I understand the value of this practice even more: if we have changed over the years, our reading experience will inevitably transform as well. There are beloved books from my past that I might only find moderately enjoyable today. Conversely, titles I once found intolerable may resonate deeply now. It's not that I've developed a more sophisticated taste; rather, I've gained the confidence to appreciate what I truly enjoy.

The possibility that a piece of art—be it a song, film, book, or painting—might have intrinsic value is a compelling reason to pause before casting judgment. However, with the overwhelming volume of content available, it becomes crucial to cultivate discernment and awareness of what resonates with us at any given moment.

Algorithm-driven recommendation systems can help us discover content aligned with our current preferences. Yet, they run the risk of narrowing our tastes, limiting our exposure to a select few options. Similarly, human recommendations can be invaluable; finding curators who align with our tastes can lead to great discoveries. Nonetheless, as our preferences evolve, we may find it necessary to seek out new curators.

Regardless of whether we depend on technology or personal recommendations, our satisfaction with suggestions hinges on our understanding of our tastes and timing. More often than not, there is nothing inherently flawed about the artwork. Equally, we are not at fault; sometimes, our paths simply do not align, and that's perfectly acceptable.
