Unlocking Your Unique Writing Style for Business Success

Chapter 1: Understanding Your Writing Process
What kind of writer are you? It's essential to recognize your unique approach to writing.
I've pinpointed two primary writing styles, each as distinct as different personalities:
The "Dictation" Writer
This type of writer is one I often admire. They have a clear vision of what they wish to communicate before even starting to write. For them, the act of writing is akin to transcribing thoughts directly from their mind—swift, seamless, and impactful. They create outlines, adhere to them, and utilize templates effectively. They often possess an innate understanding of their audience's preferences, allowing them to connect deeply with followers. It’s said that some composers, like Mozart, operated in a similar fashion.
The "Exploratory" Writer
In contrast, I identify as the exploratory writer. Frequently, I find myself writing extensively, only to later discover my intended message. This leads me to revise, rearrange, and refine my drafts numerous times. I genuinely enjoy the editing phase, and occasionally, I recognize, “Aha! I’m onto something meaningful.” Other times, I sense that my writing isn’t quite right. In such instances, I rarely discard my efforts completely; instead, I archive them for future consideration.
Ultimately, there’s no definitive right or wrong way to write. If there's a method to rewire one’s approach to writing, I would be eager to learn about it. Artists, too, exhibit these two distinct creative processes. I've encountered professional artists who can quickly produce a piece, while I recall one artist in New Mexico mentioning, “I spent the entire morning in my studio. I created three pieces, and then I discarded them all.”
The key takeaway is to embrace your writing style. When you resist it, you may find yourself stalling and becoming less efficient. The dictation writers can churn out multiple articles, emails, or blog entries in a single session, while exploratory writers, like myself, often require additional time for revisions.
Most importantly, it's common to feel discouraged by writing advice tailored for business. If you catch yourself thinking, "There's no way I can follow that suggestion," take note. Trying out a new writing style might spark your creativity or, conversely, hinder your ability to write altogether.
What are your thoughts? Which type of writer resonates with you, and how do you adapt your style?
