Chapter 1: Embracing Difficulties

Many people spend their lives in pursuit of an easier existence. If you're reading this, it's likely you're also on the lookout for a simpler way to navigate life. When we seek guidance or wisdom, we often aim to find shortcuts or advantages that can make our journey smoother.

However, life frequently proves to be quite the opposite—filled with hurdles, setbacks, and seemingly insurmountable obstacles. We often wonder if the challenges will ever relent.

But why do we crave ease? Why do we convince ourselves that things will eventually become simpler? Why do we turn to so-called experts, hoping for optimistic perspectives that might not reflect reality?

Take the pandemic as a case in point: many individuals have clung to expert opinions that align with their desires rather than facing the truth.

In June, I made a commitment to run my first marathon. Although I had been running regularly, it was not at the intensity required for marathon preparation. My previous races had only been 5ks and a few 10-milers, making this endeavor feel daunting—perhaps even a bit reckless.

While I wouldn't necessarily recommend this path to others, I also wouldn't discourage them from taking on challenges. Why? Because engaging in difficult tasks fortifies us in ways that extend across various aspects of our lives.

Scott Jurek, an ultramarathon icon, once shared how his father would respond when he complained about tough chores, especially during the harsh Minnesota winters: "Sometimes, we just do things."

Indeed, sometimes we just tackle tough tasks, such as:

  • Launching a business
  • Preparing for a marathon
  • Quitting smoking
  • Making healthier lifestyle choices, even when it's difficult
  • Engaging in difficult conversations with clients, friends, or family

Facing hard challenges is a universal aspect of life, and we must exercise the muscles that help us navigate them. There's no escaping these trials—they're an inevitable part of our journey.

Here are the invaluable lessons I've gathered over the past four months while preparing to undertake something demanding.

Section 1.1: Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

Committing to challenging endeavors can push you beyond your limits. Consider signing up for online courses that will stretch your abilities or scheduling events that force you to confront your comfort zone. Teaming up with an accountability partner on a challenging venture can also be beneficial—fuel each other's growth and enhance your capacity to tackle hard tasks.

Use commitment as a powerful tool to enhance your ability to face challenges.

Section 1.2: Dismiss Detractors (Or Keep Plans Private)

Expect negativity when you announce your intentions to pursue challenging goals. While feedback can sometimes be constructive, during this early stage of commitment, you need to adopt a resolute mindset.

You can still opt out of a demanding commitment, but you must make a decision and stick to it.

Chapter 2: Preparing for Setbacks

The first video, "How To CONVINCE YOUR MIND To Think and Achieve Anything," explores strategies to harness your mindset for success, which can be crucial when facing tough situations.

Anticipate the moments when giving up seems tempting. Whether you're training for a marathon, launching a business, or breaking a bad habit, you'll encounter points where quitting feels like the easiest choice. This struggle is what makes it hard.

Prepare for these moments—they are part of the journey.

Section 2.1: Set Micro-Goals

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by a task that requires numerous steps, causing you to procrastinate? Break your objectives into smaller, manageable parts. Focus on completing one step at a time instead of attempting to tackle everything at once.

Section 2.2: Appreciate the Journey

When undertaking challenging tasks, you often find yourself in an uncomfortable place—striving for a goal without having fully achieved it yet. Understand that the process is part of the transformation.

If you aspire to be a writer but have yet to publish anything, embrace the journey of becoming a writer.

Section 2.3: Seek No Easy Way Out

Once you embark on your path, don’t waste time searching for shortcuts. You’ve passed the easy route, and the challenges ahead may only intensify.

Section 2.4: Find Comfort in Discomfort

Learning to cope with discomfort is a valuable skill when pursuing challenging goals. As I often advise during long runs, "Get comfortable with the pain; you will be here for a while."

Section 2.5: Understand Your Motivation

If you lack clarity about why you're enduring hardship, you're likely to falter. Knowing your "why" is an essential tool that you'll need to rely on throughout your journey.

Section 2.6: Accept Small Advantages

Don't hesitate to utilize small advantages to aid your progress. Engage in small competitions with yourself to keep motivation high.

Sometimes, you may have to leap into the unknown, whether it's making a risky business investment or having a difficult conversation.

You Can’t Do It All

At some point, we must acknowledge our limitations as humans. While striving for excellence is essential, remember that you also have other obligations.

Don’t forget to cherish the small moments. Although you might initially embark on a journey for the glory of achievement, you will find that the journey itself holds many beautiful experiences.

Final Thoughts

Pursuing difficult tasks can bring pain and discomfort, but these experiences also lead to hope, strength, and empowerment that cannot be bought.

The lessons learned during these times are often the reason you set out on the journey in the first place.
