What truly brings you joy? Reflecting on a pivotal moment in my life, a teacher once asked me what I believed would lead to my happiness. My response back then was simple yet misguided: "I’m fine as I am, but to feel happier, I need a degree, a fulfilling job, and my soulmate."

This mindset defined my pursuit of happiness seven years ago. After graduating high school, I embarked on this journey, believing that these milestones would unlock a joyful life. I worked diligently for my degree, held part-time jobs, forged meaningful connections, and ultimately found love.

Yet, I soon realized that happiness is merely the foundation of love, and that love encompasses much more than the fairy tales suggest. I had checked off most of my aspirations by the time I turned 21, convinced that happiness was just around the corner. All I needed was a well-paying job, and my life would truly begin.

However, despite having love, stability, and financial comfort, an emptiness lingered. I found myself in a state of bewilderment—how could I possess everything I desired yet still grapple with unhappiness? A year passed in this confusion as I searched for joy in all the wrong places, neglecting to look within myself.

The pivotal questions I failed to ask were:

  • How can I cultivate happiness independent of external factors?
  • How can I embrace joy while being with myself?

Thus began a year of introspection, during which I unearthed the answers to these queries. I realized that true happiness originates from within. My journey evolved into a mission without a clear destination until I paused to appreciate the progress I had made. This reflection revealed the key to joyful living.

So, what is the secret to happiness? To embrace a joyful existence, I first needed to conquer my inner battles. This entailed addressing personal challenges, past experiences, and present perspectives.

The most crucial step was rediscovering the best aspects of myself. I learned that the key to true happiness had always resided within me. Mindfulness became the essential tool that guided me toward this realization, enabling me to:

  • Overcome feelings rooted in the past and present
  • Understand my inner workings
  • Appreciate the beauty found in everyday moments
  • Recognize my inherent potential

Ultimately, the secret to happiness lies within you. I learned that to be genuinely content, I had to confront and resolve the sources of my discontent. I chose to reshape my life instead of conforming to familial and societal expectations.

Despite the challenges this journey posed, I discovered a sense of happiness far greater than anything promised by societal benchmarks. Although I may not yet be where I envision in my career, I am content with who I am and the person I am becoming.
