Can Kids Detect Dangerous Individuals Through Smell?

Chapter 1: The Peculiar Case of Smell and Intuition

Have you ever come across the notorious case of Leopold and Loeb? These infamous child murderers from Chicago were defended by Clarence Darrow, who famously remarked that "Individually, they were typical youths, but together, they had the potential for heinous acts." It seems that some pairings are simply ill-fated, and perhaps the universe has a dark sense of humor about it.

I have a friend who is incredibly kind and generous—truly one of the best people I know. Yet, my son absolutely despises her and wishes he had never crossed paths with her. After each visit, he goes on a tirade about how awful she is.

"What exactly is bothering you?" I inquired, surprised by his unusual hostility.

He looked at me as if I were blind to her hidden malevolence. "You see it, don’t you, Dad?" he asked, glancing at my husband.

My husband shrugged noncommittally.

"See? Dad agrees," my son proclaimed.

"That’s not agreement," I countered.

"Well, he doesn’t disagree," my son shot back.

I hoped that my son's aversion to my friend would eventually fade, like a bad memory. But then, as if straight out of a fairytale, the very next day he exclaimed, "Mom! Can’t you smell her?"

Despite my good sense of smell, I couldn’t detect anything unusual. In fact, I’ve often joked that if I were in a tribe, they’d send me ahead to scout for wild animals, enemies, or edible mushrooms.

In exasperation, I threw my hands up. "Do you have a crush on her?" I suggested, knowing attraction can often be perplexing and even nauseating. I had felt that kind of discomfort myself before.

My son dramatically pretended to gag. "Mom! That’s disgusting!" Then he turned to my husband, "Dad! You can smell her, can’t you?"

My husband shrugged again.

"See, Mom? Dad can smell her," he reiterated.

I looked at my husband, perplexed. "Can you just agree or disagree? You’re confusing him."

My husband shrugged once more. "See?" I replied to my son. "Your father agrees with me."

This led me to ponder my son's response. To him, my friend had an unpleasant smell. It's fascinating how our sense of smell can evoke memories more powerfully than any other sense. The fragrance industry has already raked in $8.71 billion in 2023 alone.

Smells inform us about food freshness, air quality, or if there’s a gas leak. Yet, this odor dilemma felt different. It seemed innocuous, non-threatening, and unlikely to cause harm.

My son’s insistence reminded me of a scene from a horror film, where one character is panicking about an ominous situation while everyone else dismisses his fears, only to discover a house full of danger.

What if my son was like that character, sensing a threat from this woman? What if he had tapped into a deeper intuition that my senses were failing to perceive?

The concept of "crazy female friends"—do they carry a distinct scent? Could it be that the combination of her presence and mine had the potential for something sinister? Was she (Leopold) a person I (Loeb) was never meant to encounter, warning me with his instincts? Was he my metaphorical canary in the coal mine? Unfortunately, I couldn't decipher the smell.

Despite my son’s claims, I’m not dialing 911 just yet. However, if I ever feel an urge to commit murder in her company, I might consult my husband. He certainly has strong opinions on such matters.
