Engaging with Strangers: Unpredictable Outcomes

Chapter 1: The Unexpected Train Encounter
On a recent train ride into downtown Chicago, I found myself on a less crowded "milk-run" train rather than my usual express service. I noticed a young man seated directly across the aisle from me, despite the many empty seats available. He was heavily tattooed, and a part of me wondered if he had a troubled past, perhaps even a stint in prison, based solely on instinctive judgment.
His attire—cargo shorts and a plain white t-shirt—paired with the plastic shopping bag he carried, which held snacks and a drink, suggested he wasn’t headed to a typical office job. Curiously, he seemed to be searching for something among the seats.
With my headphones in place, I planned to ignore him if he attempted to strike up a conversation. Yet, as fate would have it, he engaged me. I reluctantly pulled out one earbud to listen as he rummaged through his bag and produced a long white charging cable for his phone.
He explained that his phone was dying and asked if I had a charging block he could use with the train’s outlets. I rummaged through my backpack, hoping to find something useful.
After some digging, I discovered an external battery. To my relief, it had enough charge left to help him out. I handed it over, jokingly telling him to make the most of it since I couldn’t remember the last time I charged it.
With gratitude, he plugged in his phone and soon began chatting with me. I muted my music and engaged in conversation, realizing he was friendly, albeit somewhat simple.
Chapter 2: A Journey of Transformation
As we spoke, I learned that he was grappling with addiction and had faced significant challenges, including a DUI that had restricted his driving privileges. He shared that he used to be part of a gang but was now striving to be a better role model for his children.
He expressed appreciation for government programs that were aiding his recovery, including a financial stipend and a phone. He was determined to distance himself from friends who might lead him astray.
To my surprise, he was genuinely excited about the external battery and wanted to know where he could find one. I explained its purpose and suggested he look it up online, which he promptly did.
As our conversation continued, he shared his aspirations for a brighter future for his kids, his divorce, and the arrangements he had made to spend weekends with them. He also mentioned pursuing a certification for IT work and exploring HVAC training opportunities.
I felt compelled to offer words of encouragement. I urged him to persist in his efforts, reassuring him that setbacks are a part of the journey. Our discussion took a spiritual turn when he mentioned God and how he felt blessed. I affirmed my own belief in divine guidance.
As we neared our destination, I disclosed some of my past struggles, including my own battles with substance abuse. He looked at me in disbelief, unable to reconcile my present with my past.
I explained that literature and writing had been my salvation, and I encouraged him to seek similar avenues for growth and positive connections.
Before we parted ways, he once again expressed his disbelief about my past. As he unplugged my charger, we exchanged a firm handshake. I told him to keep the charger, assuring him I had others at home.
With gratitude evident on his face, he thanked me and exited the train. I overheard him share a moment of reflection with another passenger, saying, “Blessings.”
Our encounter left both of us feeling uplifted. The exchange had not only brightened my day but had also instilled hope in him. We departed with a renewed sense of purpose and an awareness of the guiding hand of God in our lives.
