Exploring Humanity's Future: Are We Just Lucky Survivors?

Written on

Chapter 1: The Curious State of Humanity

The future of our species, Homo sapiens sapiens, presents intriguing questions. Recently, a friend shared a story about an individual who lost his entire life savings supporting the trucker convoy rally in Ottawa against mask mandates—despite having no personal stance on the issue. This led to him losing his home, as his landlord disagreed with his chosen cause. This incident prompted me to reflect: Have we always exhibited such questionable judgment? If so, how have we managed to survive without self-destruction? Stories in the news often make me ponder the state of our species on a global scale.

With this in mind, I decided to investigate what the future may hold for humanity. An article I encountered included insights from various scientists regarding our prospects.

Section 1.1: Insights from Scientists

One British cosmologist and astrophysicist predicted that small communities might establish themselves on Mars, and after several centuries, we could evolve into a distinct species. When questioned about our survival over the next 500 years, another expert suggested that even in the face of nuclear war or environmental collapse, total extinction isn’t guaranteed. As for the fear of robots taking over, the solution might be as simple as turning them off.

Subsection 1.1.1: Potential Extinction Events

A third scientist addressed the potential for a sixth extinction event, stating that if we act swiftly, we could mitigate and even halt the primary threat, which is habitat loss. Focusing on climate change could be our saving grace as a species.

According to Nick Bostrom from the Future of Humanity Institute, four possible futures could await us:

  1. Extinction: This could occur through radical evolution into a new species or simply dying out.
  2. Societal Collapse: We could experience recurrent societal collapses similar to those seen with the Ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks, leading to prolonged periods of stagnation.
  3. Plateau: A stagnation in human advancement, where civilization ceases to evolve further, though this seems less likely.
  4. Posthumanity: This concept involves significant transformations in human biology due to advancements in nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology, leading to a new kind of human existence.

The future may very well include the enhancement of humans through technology, resembling concepts from Transhumanism. This field studies how technological advancements might shape human life and experience.

Chapter 2: The Role of Technology in Our Future

In 2014, experts predicted that the Internet of Things would significantly influence our society by 2025. By 2018, scientists projected an even more interconnected world by 2069, with technology linking the natural world to our digital lives.

The first video, "99% of Ancient Human Population Wiped Out 900,000 Years Ago," delves into our species' past and raises questions about our survival strategies.

On the platform Philosophy Now, several philosophers identified global warming and nuclear conflict as major existential threats, with the latter being more immediate. Additionally, the effects of human activity on our planet are undeniable, particularly concerning climate change.

Section 2.1: The Rise of Surveillance Culture

An emerging concern is the so-called 'surveillance culture.' With technology that monitors our whereabouts—think of smartphone apps tracking our children or home devices like Alexa—our privacy is increasingly at risk.

The risks we face as a species are not due to external threats like alien invasions but are largely a result of our individual and collective choices, such as fossil fuel consumption and reliance on plastics. These practices, which make our lives convenient, are deeply ingrained in our daily routines, making it difficult to envision significant changes.

The second video, "What If HUMANS NEVER EXISTED! (reaction)," encourages viewers to contemplate the implications of our existence and the choices we make.

So, what does the future hold for humanity? Whether in decades or centuries, it's a question worth exploring. I welcome your thoughts in the comments below!
