The Future of Writing: Embracing Slang and Authenticity

Chapter 1: The Evolution of Writing Styles
In today’s world, the clever use of slang can set a writer apart in a crowded field.
Recently, while sharing a captivating DJ mix from the renowned Paul Van Dyk with my girlfriend, our excitement for the upcoming Electric Daisy Carnival was palpable. This three-day festival, which originated in Los Angeles, has expanded to various locations including Mexico, Las Vegas, and Orlando.
The mix began with an intense and haunting intro, filled with tribal beats that resonated through our speakers, building our anticipation. As the rhythm dropped, I felt our hearts sync with the energetic 140 beats per minute.
She was captivated by the mix. However, during the transition from the third to the fourth track, the DJ unexpectedly muted one of the songs, creating an abrupt silence in what had previously been a continuous flow of sound.
“What just happened?” she asked, puzzled. It seemed like a mistake. Yet, as the fourth track kicked in with its expected crescendo, I couldn’t help but think that this was no rookie error.
I explained, “In the age of computers, many DJs replaced traditional vinyl turntables with digital files. Some would compile their set into a single continuous file, hitting play and pretending to perform live.”
Indeed, while some excelled at music production, they struggled with live performances. To compensate, they would prepare everything in advance, making it look like they were actually DJing.
“Consequently,” I continued, “many skilled DJs deliberately included unexpected errors in their mixes to demonstrate their genuine mixing abilities. Strange, right?”
In a way, Paul Van Dyk’s apparent blunder highlighted his authenticity as a DJ, especially when compared to those who merely pretended to mix.
This brings us to a crucial lesson for writers…
Today’s readers appreciate authors who incorporate slang into their narratives. Conversational writing feels more relatable and invites readers into a shared experience.
As Tim Denning puts it, writing is about transferring energy from the writer to the reader. This transfer relies on using language that resonates with the audience.
However, the rise of AI poses a challenge to aspiring writers. While many memes joke about the limitations of AI-generated content, it’s worth noting that AI can produce surprisingly competent technical writing.
Did you know Microsoft has created an AI capable of interpreting images and reciting Chinese poetry based on its observations?
While some may fear for their writing careers, the human capacity for adaptability remains a significant advantage. As AI continues to evolve, our unique ability to adjust may be our salvation.
In exploring the current landscape of online content, I noticed a plethora of articles that appeared machine-generated. Reviewing my own drafts, I sought to distinguish the strong pieces from the weaker ones.
I realized that many drafts were meticulously written, but lacked the vibrancy that characterizes authentic human expression. This raised a question: could some of my work have been mistaken for AI-generated content?
Perhaps it’s time to inject more life into our writing, embracing the flair of slang and idiomatic expressions to distinguish ourselves from AI authors. Even novels are increasingly being produced by AI. To thrive in this environment, we must find innovative ways to differentiate our work.
As technology encroaches on the writing realm, we might need to adopt strategies similar to those of seasoned DJs, where intentional imperfections underscore our authenticity.
