Embracing Identity-Based Goals for a Fulfilling New Year

Chapter 1: The Challenge of New Year’s Resolutions
As the New Year begins, many of us set ambitious resolutions that often focus on specific outcomes. However, these goals can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when they represent a significant departure from our current habits.
It's important to acknowledge the effort you've put in, even if the journey hasn't been easy.
Section 1.1: Recognizing the Struggle
For instance, if you're trying to shed some holiday weight and have committed to an ambitious plan like “exercise for an hour daily” or “perform 100 crunches every day,” transitioning from a sedentary lifestyle to such rigorous routines can be daunting. If you’ve managed to stick with it, give yourself some credit. If you find it challenging, remember that your body is adjusting to new demands, and you’re likely facing a considerable mental hurdle each time you choose to push through.
Another common scenario is the desire to cut back on sugar or unhealthy foods. The instinct might be to completely eliminate these items from your diet, but such drastic measures can lead to a swift return to old habits.
These situations resonate with me personally, as I’ve experienced similar struggles repeatedly. The crux of the matter lies in the ingrained habits that we’ve developed, many of which are not particularly beneficial. For example, I often feel compelled to indulge in a sweet treat after meals. Strangely, I also avoid exercising, particularly leg workouts, because I dislike the soreness that follows.
Subsection 1.1.1: Rethinking Our Choices

The reality is that these behaviors are more about choices than habits. They’re decisions we make so automatically that we hardly think about them.
I came across an insightful article emphasizing the importance of identity-based goals rather than just outcome-driven ones. The core message is that your aspirations should align with the person you want to become, rather than merely focusing on specific achievements.
Section 1.2: Shaping Your Future Self
I aspire to be a happier and healthier individual. Therefore, I’m starting to evaluate my choices based on the vision of who I want to become. Would my future self opt for a third slice of tiramisu? Unlikely—two pieces seem more fitting for the person I aim to be.
While this approach may come across as overly philosophical, having a clear mental picture of your desired self can help you take incremental steps toward that ideal.
I'm currently reducing my sugar intake but without eliminating it entirely. If I indulge one day, I don’t see it as a failure; instead, I view it as an opportunity to improve the next day.
Chapter 2: Building Sustainable Habits
In my quest to exercise more consistently, I’m incorporating weight training into my routine a few times each week. Additionally, I’m developing an app (stay tuned!) that suggests random exercises and rep counts for various muscle groups (like back, legs, arms, chest, etc.). This variation not only keeps things interesting but also alleviates the pressure to outperform my previous workouts, as each session introduces a new challenge.
I’m starting slowly with light weights and just one set per exercise, focusing on establishing the habit before risking burnout.
So, who do you envision yourself becoming by the end of this year?
