Initially, Kimura transformed these secrets into art by delicately embroidering them onto white handkerchiefs using white thread, rendering them nearly invisible to the naked eye. The secrets varied widely, from owning a found Rolex watch to discreetly searching for jobs while at work, offering a glimpse into the concealed lives of individuals.

Why the focus on collecting secrets?

Kimura aimed to create a judgment-free environment where people could unburden themselves. In a society often quick to pass judgment, having a safe space to share deeply personal thoughts without facing consequences became a therapeutic outlet.

Over time, the project evolved. After a year of collecting nearly 100 secrets, Kimura began to transfer these messages onto handkerchiefs using computerized embroidery, while still preserving the original handwriting. However, she ultimately felt this method exposed the secrets too openly.

Thus, she transitioned to using concrete blocks. Each secret was encapsulated within a block of concrete, labeled with summaries such as "relationships," "worries," or "email and password." These artistic blocks were sold for prices ranging from 1 to 540,000 yen, reflecting the perceived value of the secret by its sharer.

One notable concrete block, priced at 5,000 yen, contained an email and password. Buyers had the option to break open the block to unveil the secret or leave it sealed indefinitely. The only stipulation was that any discovered secret must remain off social media, fostering a bond of trust between the secret sharer and the purchaser.

Kimura's "Secret House" gained immense popularity, roaming through the streets of Tokyo, and the artist even set up mailboxes for secret submissions in various shopping districts. Her work resonated widely, tapping into a universal desire for connection through shared burdens, free from judgment.
