Chapter 1: The Journey to Homeownership
Two years ago, I found myself writing extensively in my journal about the aspirations of moving out, owning property, and establishing a home. Anyone glancing through those pages might have labeled me overly ambitious since I was still a college student without a job at the time. But who’s to say you can’t dream big? After all, dreaming is free!
What started as a youthful ambition transformed into a reality in early 2023, thanks to my relentless dedication and hard work. As a freelancer and content creator, my financial circumstances shifted dramatically. Here’s what I’ve learned from owning a home at 22:
Your Sanctuary
Owning a home provides a comforting refuge, enabling you to experience a sense of inner peace. It's a space where you’re free from mistreatment and emotional harm, regardless of familial ties. I spent three years living with a family member who was emotionally abusive, yearning for a peaceful haven during that time.
Fast forward three years, and I now have a cozy studio where I can share moments with my immediate family after putting in considerable effort into my freelance work and content creation. Witnessing my parents and siblings joyful in our safe space is incredibly rewarding. We can converse, laugh, and enjoy each other’s company without the fear of disturbing anyone.
Freedom and Privacy
Having your own place grants you a level of autonomy. You gain the liberty to design and personalize your living environment. My opinions on interior design were embraced, allowing me to choose everything from tiles to paint colors and furniture.
The best part about having your own space is the absence of outside influences dictating how you live. Surrounded by the right people, you feel valued and heard, fostering a sense of tranquility. My experience in a toxic atmosphere taught me that a home should not be a source of stress; rather, it should be a nurturing and comforting environment.
Personal Achievement
Achieving homeownership instills a sense of pride and boosts self-confidence. It encourages you to strategize and pursue your long-term goals at your own pace. Being both a dreamer and a doer cultivates a mindset that anything is possible through diligent effort.
Despite the challenges, opportunities arise when you least expect them. Our self-motivation and hard work can lead us to success, even in seemingly impossible situations.
Learning to Budget
Prior to owning my house, I would typically spend 15% of my income on shopping and save the remaining 85%. Living with my parents meant I had fewer financial obligations. However, as a homeowner, I’ve become more mindful of my spending habits and monthly bills.
With the addition of air conditioning in our tropical climate, our electricity bill has increased as well. Since moving in May 2023, I’ve been navigating the process of budgeting my finances. This experience has taught me the importance of prioritizing household responsibilities and managing my spending wisely.
Being a homeowner emphasizes the need to budget effectively and resist the temptation to overspend on non-essentials.
