Keeping Your Pug Fit: A Guide to Healthy Habits

Chapter 1: The Vet's Surprise
At almost 16 months old, my pug recently underwent his annual veterinary check-up. To my astonishment, the veterinarian remarked that Du Wop was muscular. This was not a description I anticipated, but it certainly pleased me. Many pugs I encounter vary significantly in shape—some are trim, while others are decidedly overweight. It's disheartening to see such chubby pugs, and I believe that if your pet is dealing with health issues, increasing their exercise is essential.
Pugs are akin to infants; they require guidance and interaction to thrive. Left to their own devices, a pug will primarily eat and sleep. Trust me, if I allowed Du Wop free rein, he would graze all day without hesitation.
It's crucial for pet owners to take their dogs out for walks. This not only benefits the dog but also the owner. I typically walk around 2,000 steps daily with Du Wop, and he relishes these outings. However, I must stay vigilant to prevent him from swallowing any litter or discarded items—he's quite the scavenger!
After a year of growth, my pug has transformed significantly. He started at a mere 3.5 pounds and now weighs a robust 22.5 pounds—7.5 pounds more than the vet had expected. The vet even noted that Du Wop had large feet when he weighed about 7 pounds less.
Chapter 2: Establishing a Routine
Since bringing Du Wop home, I've ensured he follows a structured routine. Just like us, dogs benefit from having a schedule. Each morning, I take him out for bathroom breaks before feeding him. He eats twice a day: once around 5 am and again at 4:30 pm. If I miss his afternoon meal, he becomes rather irritable, much like a hungry human would.
About 30 minutes to an hour after breakfast, we go for a walk that lasts around 20 minutes. On occasion, he gets a burst of energy and decides to run, prompting me to join in the fun. It's a great way for both of us to stay active. Additionally, some days we play fetch in the backyard or simply enjoy each other's company outdoors.
Dogs can lead long, healthy lives, but their owners play a crucial role in ensuring they get the necessary exercise.
