Navigating Challenges: Lessons from a Legally Blind CEO

Written on

Chapter 1: Embracing Life's Challenges

In both business and personal life, every challenge serves as a test of our resolve. When circumstances spiral out of control, the urge to give up can be overwhelming. However, for those who persevere, there lies an opportunity for others to witness the true essence of your character during tough times. The ability to maintain composure and keep moving forward is invaluable, as there are always observers taking note of how you manage adversity.

As a legally blind CEO, my daily routine is meticulously planned, from relying on my guide dog to utilizing specialized software. Over the years, alongside the typical hurdles everyone faces, I've navigated the unique complexities that come with vision impairment. Here are three key principles I adhere to when confronted with significant obstacles.

Section 1.1: Keep Moving Forward, Regardless of the Situation

Recently, I was scheduled to give a virtual presentation. After extensive preparation, just moments before going live, my Wi-Fi connection failed, preventing me from linking up with a visual interpreter who was set to assist me. Despite my efforts to troubleshoot with both phones, nothing worked. As the clock ticked towards 11:00 a.m., my assistant scrambled to download the necessary software, forcing us to start from scratch just one minute before our scheduled time.

To our surprise, we soon realized we had been broadcasting live throughout this chaos. Meanwhile, my voice assistance technology, JAWS, began speaking unexpectedly. As I introduced myself with a strained smile, I was frantically trying to silence JAWS, which started producing nonsensical sounds.

Behind the scenes, I had six physical tokens to remind me of my presentation topics, but I could only use one hand to reach for them while wrestling with JAWS with the other. Despite the confusion, I maintained a smile reminiscent of Miss America.

The key lesson here is that by proactively preparing and having contingency plans, you can mitigate potential setbacks. However, when all else fails, persevering through the chaos speaks volumes about your resilience. My team later told me I handled the situation well; the presentation turned out smoother than expected, and the audience was even more engaged once they learned about the challenges I faced behind the scenes.

Section 1.2: Resourcefulness and Seeking Assistance

After realizing I could no longer read a teleprompter, I shifted from television to real estate, quickly becoming a leading agent. During an especially hectic week, I faced a car accident that ended my driving days, creating a significant challenge in a profession where driving clients to view homes is an unspoken expectation. I had to rethink how I would conduct showings.

I began taking up to twelve public buses daily, arriving at open houses ahead of time to memorize the layouts. Initially, I made excuses for my inability to drive, hesitant to disclose my vision issues. It became clear, however, that my clients were noticing my struggles, so I decided to be honest. I asked them for help with transportation, and to my relief, no one judged or replaced me with another agent.

Often, individuals refrain from requesting help due to fear of appearing vulnerable, especially in front of clients. Yet, vulnerability is a common human experience. By shedding the superhero facade, we can recognize our need for support. I have forged enduring relationships with those who stepped in to help me achieve the impossible.

For instance, while filming my live TV show, I discovered the makeup artist was absent. The director sent an intern to pick up supplies, and we managed to create a makeshift makeup solution just in time. The camaraderie lightened the atmosphere, and everyone on set agreed that the "No Makeup" show was a hit.

Section 1.3: Honoring Commitments

I host a live call-in show, and one day, due to a scheduling error, the producer didn’t show. With promotions already circulated and sponsors counting on the show’s success, I had to adapt. We quickly devised a plan: I would initiate a three-way call with my engineer and each caller. Despite the basic setup, we fulfilled our commitments successfully.

Another time, while preparing to promote a TV show in Las Vegas, I woke up feeling dizzy. Although I had already bought my airline tickets, the vertigo persisted throughout the flight and into the hotel. When it was time to perform, I sent everyone except my producer away to regroup. Afterward, I prioritized my health and returned to my hotel room to recover.

In many roles, others rely on you to fulfill your commitments. It’s crucial to respect their time and uphold your promises. When you agree to something, be present. I have pushed through exhaustion, illness, and distractions, understanding that overcoming adversity fosters stronger connections. Celebrate those victories, especially when they arise from seemingly insurmountable challenges. Though the journey may be bumpy, you will gain insights into your own resilience and the importance of collaboration.
