Lessons in Adaptation: How One Day University Transformed Overnight

Written on

Chapter 1: The Shift to Digital Learning

The past couple of years have been quite a revelation, showcasing how swiftly we can adapt to our evolving needs. Businesses had to reconstruct their frameworks almost instantaneously, and while some flourished amidst these changes, others struggled to keep up. Reflecting on this, it's clear that such rapid transformations would have been unimaginable just a decade or so ago.

During the holiday season, I had an enlightening conversation via Zoom with the founder of a company that, just three years back, had minimal digital presence. Their operations were largely based on in-person gatherings. Yet, in a matter of weeks, this organization transitioned to virtual platforms, successfully navigating the challenges that arose.

The company in question is One Day University—a fascinating case study on innovating under pressure and reshaping digital education.

Chapter 2: The Birth of One Day University

One Day University was established in 2006 with a unique premise: to create events featuring esteemed university professors who would present popular courses to everyday individuals in one-day sessions. However, as the pandemic unfolded, the company rapidly shifted to a fully online model.

Section 2.1: The Value of Expert Instruction

If you’ve followed my writings, you may know that I’m an avid YouTube viewer. My motivation is to gain insights into various topics, yet I am acutely aware of the potential pitfalls of uncurated content. On platforms like YouTube, anyone can present themselves as an authority, leading to a vast array of unreliable information.

As a precaution, I often manage my viewing history, eliminating content that steers me toward misinformation. In this environment, One Day University stands out as a reliable alternative, offering a structured learning experience led by genuine experts.

Schragis, the founder of One Day University, emphasizes the importance of having qualified educators leading the discussions. "If a professor is highly regarded at a university, that's a significant endorsement of their expertise," he states.

Section 2.2: Competing in the Digital Education Space

One Day University is not alone in the online education arena. Its competitors often reflect different educational philosophies rather than merely replicating each other. For instance, platforms like MasterClass focus on celebrity instructors sharing their experiences, which presents its own set of challenges.

While Schragis acknowledges MasterClass's appeal, he argues that One Day University’s reliance on experienced educators provides a distinct advantage. "We are fortunate that if a professor is popular among students, it indicates they excel at teaching," he explains.

Chapter 3: Navigating the Pandemic's Challenges

The pandemic posed a significant threat to One Day University, which was thriving as a live events company. Schragis recalls, "In March 2020, everything stopped. We were running events in 61 cities, and suddenly, it all came to a halt."

Fortunately, the Paycheck Protection Program helped stabilize the company, enabling it to explore digital distribution more fully. This forced pivot allowed One Day University to innovate quickly, leveraging technologies like Zoom to adapt to a lifelong learning model.

Section 3.1: The Transition to Online Learning

With a pre-existing list of contacts from years of hosting events, the company effectively communicated its new online format, leading to a remarkable increase in membership. "The day we sent that email, around 5,000 people signed up," Schragis recalls.

The platform’s popularity soared, as many discovered a newfound desire to learn from the comfort of their homes during lockdowns. The operational complexities associated with in-person events dissipated, allowing for a more streamlined experience.

Section 3.2: Adapting to New Learning Dynamics

Transitioning to online formats did come with its challenges. Initially, the open communication between professors and attendees led to some disorganization. However, the company quickly refined its approach to include more structured sessions, where the professor speaks for a set duration followed by a Q&A.

Reflecting on this learning phase, Schragis notes, "We launched in April, but we really didn't have our system fully optimized until May."

Chapter 4: The Future of One Day University

Schragis remains open to the idea of returning to live events when the timing feels right, particularly when conditions permit large gatherings once again. "The excitement of in-person events is undeniable," he acknowledges.

However, the successful pivot to a digital model has fundamentally reshaped One Day University's operations, leading to its acquisition. This unexpected success story highlights the adaptability of companies in challenging times.

In conclusion, my conversation with Schragis underscored the importance of fostering curiosity in learning. One Day University caters to those who seek knowledge for its own sake, allowing individuals to explore topics they find intriguing.

As Schragis puts it, "People reach points in their lives where they become curious about subjects they never explored before." This notion of learning without obligation is essential, especially in a world inundated with misinformation.

Perhaps nurturing our innate curiosity is a pathway back to quality information and genuine learning.
