Chapter 1: Misconceptions About Autism and Criminal Behavior
The case of Sam Bankman-Fried, who received a 25-year prison sentence for defrauding FTX customers out of nearly $8 billion, brings to light serious misconceptions regarding autism. While many aspects of his case deserve in-depth analysis, I wish to focus on a particular defense claim: that his autism affected his awareness of his actions.
When discussing the fraud, Bankman-Fried’s detached demeanor was cited as evidence of his autistic traits. This led to the assertion that his condition played a role in his lack of awareness during the fraudulent activities.
Autism Does Not Equate to Criminality
