Reliving Today: Embracing Moments Amidst Life’s Challenges

Chapter 1: The Journey of Self-Reflection
Reflecting on our past often brings a mix of nostalgia and regret. We tend to look back and wish for the chance to relive certain days — even the challenging ones.
When I think back to my childhood, I remember being quite the sulker. There’s a memorable family dinner photo where my brother grins widely while I sit beside him, wearing a frown that could rival a puppy's.
It wasn’t unusual for my older brother and me to argue, which would leave me in a sulky mood for hours. I was like an iceberg dragging everyone down with me — certainly not the recipe for a fun time.
As I matured, my goal became to embody joy, gratitude, and a sense of playfulness. However, I still have days when it feels like the weight of the world is on my shoulders.
Despite knowing that life is more than okay, I sometimes find myself in a funk. It’s as if negative thoughts cling to me like wet clothes when I’m exhausted or stressed.
I dislike being in that space because I know it’s not enjoyable for those around me. Yet, I find myself lingering there. Why? Because feeling sorry for myself seems easier than making a deliberate choice to shift my mindset.
And making that shift is indeed a choice.
Negative thoughts can be formidable, requiring consistent effort to overcome — it takes time and persistence.
Now, these low moods rarely last more than a day. Rest, exercise, sunshine, journaling, and reading all help me break free from my own mental confines.
Mornings often bring clarity and brightness. However, navigating through difficult feelings takes intentionality to emerge unscathed.
As I age, I strive to value each moment more deeply.
The swift passage of time can be daunting; sometimes, I wish I could return to childhood.
Not to the child who mopes and seeks sympathy, but to one who embraces life with an expansive smile, an open heart, and a carefree spirit — living without regrets.
Time is invaluable, particularly with family. Finding joy in family moments is increasingly rare, especially as we grow older.
I refuse to look back and wonder, “What was I doing?” or “Why wasn’t I happier when love surrounded me?”
Happiness is not something the world grants us; it’s a conscious choice we must make, regardless of external circumstances.
It’s more than just declaring happiness when we don’t genuinely feel it. Just as we go to the gym to strengthen our bodies or read to stimulate our minds, I believe happiness is constructed, brick by brick, with gratitude, perspective, and action.
My grandfather always said that the things we worry about the most rarely come to pass, and I’ve found this to be true time and again.
If you, like me, occasionally fall into a low mood, reflect on the challenges you've previously overcome that were more daunting than what you face now.
Write freely about your feelings. This practice helps gain perspective. Once we see our problems on paper, they become manageable rather than chaotic thoughts swirling in our minds.
Take a stroll outdoors and allow yourself to feel small and weightless beneath the vastness of the evening sky — the beauty of nature can be incredibly healing.
We are human, and our imperfections are part of the richness of life.
Our current struggles may seem significant, but in the future, we’ll look back on days like today and wish for another opportunity to live through them — difficulties included.
The time to cherish life is now. Embrace the beauty in the struggle, the depth of your emotions, and the gift of your current situation.
Be gentle with yourself.
Never forget how far you have come.
