The Art of Going Dark: Finding Balance in Isolation

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Going Dark

Going dark is an art that many individuals have quietly refined. It refers to the practice of withdrawing from social interactions during periods of stress until the issues at hand are resolved. Personally, this has often been my go-to strategy when facing challenges, particularly evident during the month of May.

Many people experience this at some point in their lives. For instance, imagine being a student on the brink of failing, with final exams approaching. Suddenly, socializing with friends becomes a luxury you can no longer afford as you buckle down to study. Or consider the scenario where you’ve just lost your car in an accident, and now you must navigate the complexities of replacing it without sacrificing your financial stability. In such moments, you might tell those around you that you need some solitude to sort through your situation.

While going dark can effectively help you concentrate on your problems, it's crucial to avoid lingering in that state for too long. Prolonged isolation can lead to detrimental effects such as depression, anxiety, and distorted perceptions.

I’d like to share some personal experiences of my own moments of going dark. By the conclusion, I hope you'll appreciate the benefits of this approach while recognizing the necessity of maintaining balance.

Section 1.1: A Positive Experience

During my time in graduate school, I encountered a significant obstacle in my research. I struggled to get my target DNA sequence to appear correctly. The stress of potentially missing my deadline, coupled with the dread of having to explain my difficulties to my lab mentor, became overwhelming. I decided to take a step back and give myself some space.

I spent time in a darkened room, closing my eyes and truly focusing on the emptiness around me. This practice felt as if time paused, allowing me to methodically revisit my experiment, analyzing each step. After about a week, clarity struck—I needed to adjust my DNA-to-primer ratio. The issue was that my primers were binding to one another due to the insufficient DNA present.

Looking back, the solution was obvious, but only became clear after I eliminated all distractions and concentrated on the problem at hand. I truly believe that focusing is a skill that flourishes when you choose to embrace darkness.

Section 1.2: A Negative Experience

On a different note, I faced severe financial difficulties following the unexpected loss of my dog. The sudden nature of his passing meant I had to make quick decisions regarding his care. Combining the nearly $900 vet bill with my husband’s medical expenses and my own school costs created an overwhelming financial burden.

Money has always been a sensitive topic for me, and in response to this crisis, I instinctively went dark. I frantically brainstormed every possible solution to resolve our financial woes without risking eviction. Unfortunately, every idea seemed to lead back to the same tight spot. This state of mind lasted from March to May, and even now, I still carry some residual stress.

Ultimately, I realized the only viable option was to reach out to family for a small loan. Although it was a fraction of what I needed, it was a relief to have something rather than nothing. However, the downside of my prolonged isolation was that I became so fixated on the financial burden that I neglected to process my grief over my dog’s death. I was subconsciously using the bill as a distraction from my feelings, as if it were just another routine expense.

This illustrates the necessity of maintaining balance. While going dark for a limited time helped me tackle a research challenge, overindulging in that state caused me to lose touch with my emotions. I was unable to begin the healing process and instead developed an unhealthy fixation.

I hope this discussion sheds light on the value of going dark and offers insight into how to utilize this technique appropriately.

Hang in there, you’ve got this!
