Engaging in exaggerated behaviors, like exuberantly gesturing on the street, feels impractical. Yet, the digital age promotes such antics, leading me to question whether I should conform. Personally, I prefer to indulge in a diet of substantial information rather than superficial style; hence, my inclination to read books over scrolling through Pinterest or Imgur.
With my appetite for knowledge satisfied, I find myself better equipped to navigate the complexities of the products I encounter. I ponder their applications, costs for upgrades, and historical contexts—questions that far exceed what a visually appealing ad could convey.
Being informed is crucial, especially for those who engage with style-centric advertising. Without a solid understanding of a product's functionalities, how can one make informed decisions? For instance, I wouldn’t recklessly submerge my smartphone in water without comprehending its waterproof capabilities. The lack of context in a stylized ad leaves too many questions unanswered—like whether a device can withstand chlorine or saltwater.
When we invest in information, we often undermine our own value, as many companies freely disseminate data. In contrast, purchasing style can be a costly endeavor. Our current consumption habits are precarious; we tend to buy excessively and impulsively, especially considering the dynamics of earning money. Take, for instance, a teenager spending twelve hundred dollars on a limited-edition Nike collaboration. Though they may not have earned that money, they spend it as if they did. Their growing feet are a stark reminder of the futility of such purchases.
Consumerism is spiraling out of control, flowing from parents to their children. Financial resources are often placed in the hands of the younger generation, who may lack the maturity or responsibility to manage it wisely. While I advocate for allowances, it's essential to encourage a system where children earn their rewards rather than receive handouts, as they are likely to squander money as quickly as it arrives.
What could remedy this situation? Knowledge. What could exacerbate it? Flashy, superficial ads.
