Creating Your Unique Definition of Adulting: A Realistic Approach

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Adulting

Mastering the concept of adulting is a gradual process. The idea that one can have everything figured out is a myth. Perfection isn’t attainable; we won't excel in every aspect of our lives every single day.

Initially, we strive to check all the boxes on our to-do lists, only to realize that achieving those goals often leads to the discovery of even more tasks. So, what comes next?

Society pressures us to meet these expectations by the age of twenty-five. As someone nearing that milestone, it often feels like I’m piloting an aircraft without any flight training.

We are led to believe that we should have our finances, relationships, and careers in perfect order. Yet, the expectation is that we should also stand out in our endeavors.

Adulting requires significant effort. It’s a continuous battle against procrastination and finding the drive to tackle tasks we’d rather avoid. It’s crucial to ask ourselves if a particular decision will serve us well in the long term.

Section 1.1: The Reality of Responsibility

One essential aspect of adulthood is that we often have to engage in activities we’d prefer to skip. We work to earn our meals, make mindful food choices to maintain health, and commit to exercising even when we’re tempted to binge-watch videos on TikTok.

Responsibility becomes a prominent theme in our lives. We come to terms with the fact that we are now the ones steering our own journeys—handling laundry, preparing meals, and scheduling medical appointments.

Section 1.2: Making Choices

Defining what being an adult means is an intricate process. It involves making decisions—not just once, but consistently opting for what aligns with our long-term goals.

Consider this: Do you finish writing your article, or do you drive across town to satisfy a sudden craving for chocolate-covered marshmallow candies?

The challenge lies in cultivating the discipline to evaluate whether our choices will benefit us in the future.

Chapter 2: The Rewards of Adulting

Adulting isn't entirely negative. The effort we put in ultimately yields positive results. Engaging in tasks we might initially resist can lead to a sense of accomplishment. Eating well contributes to an improved quality of life, and staying active can make a noticeable difference during physical activities, such as climbing stairs.

While adulting may lack glamour, it’s about fulfilling obligations even when motivation wanes. However, it also includes dedicating time to pursue passions.

Striking a balance is crucial. Achieving that equilibrium takes time and doesn’t happen overnight. Each day, work toward creating your unique definition of adulting.
