Embracing the Joy of Gardening as Spring Approaches

Written on

Chapter 1: The Awakening of Spring

As I stepped outside to walk my dog today, I noticed that the thick ice layer on our driveway seemed less stable than before. The familiar 'singing' sound echoed beneath my feet as I felt a crack form with each step. Although the day is still cold and wintry, the clear blue sky and the warm sun on my skin signal a change. Meltwater has begun to pool in that old pothole we’ve been meaning to fix.

The sowing season is nearly upon us, set to kick off next month. My anticipation builds every year, even if my energy wanes as the season progresses. Fatigue and arthritis sometimes hinder my efforts, and keeping up with local pests can be a challenge. Yet, the tasks of preparing seed trays, nurturing seedlings, and hardening them off fill me with enthusiasm each spring.

In my belief, the changing seasons symbolize significant life transitions. Digging into the earth, removing stones, and creating a space for new growth is how I honor this essential time of year. It's labor-intensive, but fulfilling, especially given how much our natural surroundings need care today.

Fresh soil ready for planting

Chapter 1.1: The Garden's Bounty

I have saved seeds from a giant butternut squash last year, now dried and ready for planting. They’ll be accompanied by bush beans, carrots, cherry tomatoes, ground cherries, and cucumbers. I also plan to include peas, bunching onions, and chives. Perhaps this year, I can keep the slugs at bay long enough for some ruby chard to flourish alongside the stubborn rhubarb plant that remains outside my front door.

Soon, the echinacea will begin to emerge through the dry grass, and we'll find out if that resilient thyme has survived another winter. My apple trees require nourishment, even as they withhold their blossoms from me. Regardless, I will continue to nurture them as they are my responsibility. My front yard is set to burst with color once the last remnants of snow disappear.

For me, gardening is akin to a form of prayer. I’ll be that quirky neighbor again, talking to myself as I dig out a weed with my shovel. It’s hard work, but I take joy in it whenever I can.

Chapter 1.2: The Joy of Harvesting

Nothing compares to the taste of freshly picked vegetables and herbs from your own garden. Snow peas and cherry tomatoes can be as delightful as candy—sweet yet tangy. Searching for the first ground cherries that fall from their plants feels like a treasure hunt, navigating through branches and leaves.

The first time I harvested my own potatoes was emotional; their flavor was incredible. Boiled and served with sour cream and freshly chopped chives, they were a revelation. Nowadays, it’s easy to forget the origins of our food. A quick trip to the grocery store can yield a bunch of celery, but did you know that growing celery can take up to 140 days of favorable weather?

Many of us overlook the effort that goes into food production. This disconnect can lead to a lack of appreciation for those who work hard to bring meals to our tables. As pollution continues to plague our planet, we often ignore the destruction of our natural landscapes, oblivious to the consequences of our actions.

Healthy soil fosters healthy people, yet we easily forget this fundamental truth.

Chapter 2: Understanding the Garden

Not everyone has the ability to maintain a garden, and that’s perfectly acceptable. I don’t intend to shame anyone for their circumstances, whether due to time constraints, living conditions, or lack of interest. Even I sometimes lack the energy to combat the relentless onslaught of snails.

Yet, even learning about gardening can be enriching. Understanding the balance required for good compost, identifying quality soil, and knowing how seeds germinate is valuable knowledge. I believe this should be part of educational curricula; children should learn how to grow vegetables in school.

Nurturing the environment begins with education. After that, it’s all about getting your hands dirty—and there’s nothing more beautiful than that.
